Your Activities May Be Common. Your Story Doesn’t Have to Be.

“I haven’t founded a nonprofit, made a groundbreaking research discovery, or won a national award. Are my extracurricular activities too ordinary?”

When preparing your Common Application essay, you may find yourself asking the same question. Playing in an ensemble, joining a basketball team, volunteering—when so many applicants share these experiences, it is easy to believe that a stronger essay requires a more unusual activity.

But the more revealing question is not simply, “How unusual is this activity?” It is, “What did I notice, what changed in me, and who did I become through this experience?”

The same activity can become a list of accomplishments—or a story that helps the reader genuinely understand you. The difference often lies in how you interpret and tell it.

Look Inward: Move Beyond Achievement.

The first approach is to shift your focus from “What did I accomplish?” to “What did this experience help me understand?”

For example, a student who plays an instrument might describe years of practice, earning a place in an ensemble, and eventually performing as a soloist. These milestones matter. But if the essay stops there, the reader learns mainly about the student’s musical résumé—not their personality, questions, or growth.

A more layered story might begin with a specific tension: the student once believed that excellence meant making their own voice heard. In an ensemble, however, they discovered that contributing well sometimes meant listening closely—and knowing when not to stand out.

Solo performance taught them to express themselves; ensemble playing taught them to coordinate with others. They began to rethink the relationship between individuality and teamwork: having a voice does not mean overpowering others, and belonging does not mean disappearing.

The essay is no longer simply saying, “I am good at music.” It is exploring, “How do I understand myself, and how do I relate to others?”

The key is not to attach an elegant metaphor to an activity. It is to find a real moment that gives your reflection something concrete to rest on.

Look Outward: Carry the Learning Beyond the Activity.

The second approach is to ask: once you leave the court, the stage, or the club meeting, does the experience still shape your choices and actions?

Take basketball as an example. “Basketball taught me teamwork and perseverance” names the lessons, but it does not yet show how those lessons were learned.

Go further: How did you respond to frustration after a costly mistake? How did you adjust your communication when a teammate was struggling? When you were no longer the highest scorer, did your understanding of what it meant to help the team change?

Then look for genuine connections to other parts of your life. Did the way you learned to recover from mistakes help you respond to a disappointing exam? Did listening on the court change how you handled disagreement during a group project?

When an essay traces a specific experience, a change in understanding, and an action that followed, the activity becomes more than background. It becomes a way for the reader to understand how you think.

You do not need to connect one game to the entire world. Showing how it changed the way you approached your next challenge can already give you something meaningful to explore.

Stay Honest: Growth Does Not Have to Be Dramatic.

Finding meaning is not the same as exaggerating it.

After hearing impressive application stories, students may feel that every experience must be “life-changing” and every activity must have “social impact.” A routine volunteering experience becomes a sweeping mission; a brief setback becomes a complete personal transformation.

Yet when the conclusions reach far beyond what the experience supports, the story can lose its credibility.

You do not have to claim that you stopped fearing failure. You can say: failure still hurts, but I am learning to regroup before moving forward.

You do not have to claim that you have mastered leadership. You can say: I once thought leading meant providing answers; later, I realized that sometimes it means first understanding someone else’s question.

These reflections are less grand, but more specific—and closer to what growth actually felt like.

Tell the Experience. Reveal the Person.

As you revise, use three questions to examine your draft:

Have I shown a specific moment, rather than simply summarized an experience?

Have I revealed a change in understanding, rather than listed my strengths?

Is each important claim supported by an actual detail or action?

Your activity does not have to be rare to produce a meaningful story. What you need may not be a more extraordinary experience, but a closer look at the experiences you already have.

Rather than trying to present yourself as someone who can do everything, let the reader see how you think, how you face uncertainty, and how you gradually change through experience.

An essay does more than tell the reader, “This is what I did.” It helps them understand, “This is why it mattered to me.”

Steven

Steven’s Writing Classes: Beyond Polished Sentences.

At 高瓴教育, we want essay preparation to be more than a final round of polishing during application season. We want it to be a process through which students understand themselves, organize their thinking, and develop their own voices.

Steven

The value of Steven’s writing classes can be expressed in one sentence:

Not just better writing, but deeper thinking, closer observation, and clearer expression.

From a vague feeling to a question worth exploring. From scattered memories to a story with detail and logic. From “I want to sound impressive” to “I want to be understood”—this is a meaningful direction for essay preparation.

Each year, students in Steven’s writing classes discover the stories that are truly theirs—and go on to join leading Ivy League universities and Stanford. One student’s application essay was even quoted in a speech at Stanford’s new student convocation.

Behind these results is not a shortcut, but a process of questioning, discussion, and revision: Why does this experience matter? Which details are truly yours? What kind of writing allows the reader to see who you really are?

We believe a strong essay grows from an experience that has been truly understood. When students learn to observe carefully, think independently, and write honestly, they create more than an application essay. They gain a clearer understanding of themselves.

Your experience may not be rare.
Your understanding of it can be uniquely yours.
