Lisa, one of the founders of Hillhouse Education Center (Gao Ling Education Consulting Company), talked with everyone about the increasingly popular AP courses and AP exams, analyzed the planning of AP courses from a professional perspective, and gave everyone some valuable suggestions. We will comprehensively analyze how to plan AP courses and AP exams through a series of 3 articles, as well as various AP tutoring courses provided by Hillhouse that take into account competitions .
1What are AP courses? What are AP exams?
Advanced Placement courses, also known as AP courses, are college-level courses offered by the College Board at the high school level and can be taught all over the world. AP courses offer 38 subjects in 7 categories, including arts, English, history and social sciences, mathematics and computer science, natural sciences, world languages and literature, and capstone diploma projects.
The AP exam (Advanced Placement) is a college preparatory course exam sponsored by the College Board .
By studying AP courses and taking corresponding AP exams , students can challenge higher academic levels in high school and demonstrate their academic ability and learning initiative.
2 The impact of AP course grades and AP test scores on college admissions
In the American college application system, there is a column called " Student's Course Difficulty " in the recommendation letter form representing the school counselor . If a student chooses IB courses or higher-quality AP courses and obtains excellent grades , the course difficulty will be greatly increased, which will give them an advantage in admission . This shows the importance of AP courses.
AP courses and AP exams are considered when colleges are admitting students, but colleges place more emphasis on the AP course scores learned in school from September to June . Because the AP exam is only a two-hour exam, one exam is not enough to show a student's strength. The school's AP course scores are a combination of experiments, homework, exams, and classroom performance, so an excellent AP course transcript will be more convincing when applying to college.
Therefore, students with strong learning ability are better off choosing schools with AP courses and actively striving for good grades, which will give them a certain advantage when applying to college. In addition, excellent AP scores can speed up the college learning process and save college tuition.
Q: What are the specific advantages of AP course scores?
1. Improve the average score: AP courses are considered as twelfth grade courses, and will automatically increase the score by about 3 points. For example, a student who takes 95 points in AP Chemistry at St. George's School can also get 98 points in Chemistry 12. Some AP courses count as eight credits after completing one course.
2. Improve GPA : For most AP courses in American high schools, the GPA is counted as 5 points, and the GPA for regular courses is counted as 4 points. The GPA in grades 9-12 directly affects admission to the top 10-20, top 30 or top 50 universities in the United States.
The results of 3AP courses also affect admission to British universities : Cambridge and Oxford require five AP courses with scores of 95 or above, and some universities require three AP courses.
3 AP credit courses offered by Hillhouse
In order to help students whose schools do not offer AP courses, we at Hillhouse have arranged AP credit courses, which can earn 100-point credits and be included in the BC transcript.
4 Hillhouse offers non-credit AP courses and subject competitions
For students whose schools offer AP courses, we can provide pre-study and after-class tutoring to ensure high scores in the school's AP courses while also considering competitions.
Our graduates have achieved top grades in the most difficult courses at schools such as St George's, WPGA, Crofton, VC, Uhill and VC.
The picture below shows our graduate who received the WPGA honor for having the highest average score in grades 10-12. This student started taking AP courses in the tenth grade, and most of his courses in grades 11-12 were AP courses.
2. For students who do not choose AP credit courses and only take AP exams, we also provide AP exam courses and consider competitions at the same time.
