Steven is a co-founder of Hillhouse Education Consulting. He graduated with honors from Yale University, earning a double major in Life Sciences and Economics. As a student at Vancouver's Churchill Secondary School, he ranked first in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, achieving full marks in eight Higher Level subjects. In Grade 12, he was one of only two students in Canada selected to participate in the National Youth Summit Under 30.
He went on to complete a master’s degree in Media Studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he received the top GPA award and was invited to teach academic writing to graduate students. Steven has worked in the medical and health consulting sector and was part of the “Media and Entrepreneurship” research team led by the Dean and faculty members at UBC. He is passionate about entrepreneurship in education and is committed to mentoring the next generation of leaders.
Steven specializes in developing students’ critical thinking and writing abilities. His students have earned international recognition in writing competitions and have held leadership positions such as student union president, cabinet ministers, and Secretary-General of Vancouver Model United Nations. He has also guided students through the college application process, including crafting compelling essays that have helped them gain admission to top Ivy League institutions. One student’s essay was even quoted by the Dean of Stanford College in a welcome speech to incoming freshmen. Each year, Steven’s students stand out with their distinct voices and exceptional writing. Parents often praise him as “the famous pen of Vancouver” for his guidance and results.
01 Work related to writing
1. College application essay guidance
Steven provides expert guidance on college application essays, helping students craft compelling and authentic narratives that resonate with admissions officers. His own application essay to Yale University received a handwritten note from the Associate Director of Admissions, who remarked:
“This is a very impressive essay. I really like how it introduces the application and highlights the benefits of science to the public… This truly reflects the spirit of science at Yale.”
This personal recognition underscores Steven’s deep understanding of what top universities seek in their applicants and his ability to mentor students in delivering essays that leave a lasting impression.
Since Grade 12, Steven has been guiding middle and high school students in crafting impactful college application essays. Over the years, he has built and led a dedicated team of educators who support students in applying to top universities across North America and the UK. Through a process that emphasizes self-reflection, critical thinking, and personal growth, Steven helps students gain both confidence and clarity in articulating their unique stories.
Drawing on years of experience, Steven authored a comprehensive College Application Essay Tutorial, which has become a highly sought-after resource among students and educators. Steven is known for guiding students who are often underestimated—particularly “average” students, including many Asian boys whose grades in core subjects may fall below 90%. With Steven’s coaching, these students have successfully gained admission to some of the world’s most selective universities. Each admissions cycle brings remarkable results, with students surpassing expectations and reaching new heights.
Case Highlight:
In the 2022–2023 academic year, one student who received full academic and application planning support from Grade 9 to 12 was admitted to Stanford University. The student’s application essay deeply resonated with both the admissions officer and the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. During the official freshman welcome ceremony, the Dean quoted this line from the essay:
“In your historical research, you want to go beyond the celebrities in the events and turn to the unsung heroes who truly shaped the course of world events…”
This moment not only validated the student’s voice, but also reflected the level of insight and authenticity that Steven’s mentorship fosters in every applicant.
Part of the document content:
Parents often share that the most valuable part of the college application journey was not just the admission results, but the profound personal growth and self-reflection their children experienced along the way. Many students became more thoughtful, confident, and self-aware—outcomes that extended far beyond the acceptance letters.
Graduates from Hillhouse Education Consulting have gone on to earn admission to top universities in the United States, enrolling in prestigious programs across a range of disciplines, including:
2. Results of tutoring for private school application documents :
We provide comprehensive planning and coaching for students and families applying to private schools, following standards aligned with the expectations of Ivy League university applications. Under the guidance of Steven and his team, students have achieved an exceptional success rate. Application documents and interview performances coached by our team have consistently resulted in offers of admission from leading private schools, including St. George’s, Crofton House, York House, and West Point Grey Academy (WPGA), among others.
2. Reading and Writing Courses
For nearly a decade, Mr. Steven has been dedicated to "cultivating thoughtful, articulate young minds through reading and writing." He curates engaging content from renowned publications such as The New Yorker and TIME, as well as selected short stories and novels, and independently develops comprehensive tutorial series (8–10 sessions each) tailored for students in Grades 5–12 (see course list below).
With a distinctive teaching style and sharp analytical insight, Steven inspires students to explore current social issues, analyze literary techniques, and enhance their powers of observation, critical thinking, and written expression. His students have shown marked improvement in their school English grades and have earned awards in a variety of writing competitions.

Exceptional Outcomes in Writing and College Admissions
Every year, Steven’s writing instruction helps students—many of whom start with average academic performance, ranking in the 40s or 50s in their grade—gain admission to top universities such as Stanford and Columbia. These achievements consistently exceed expectations, especially considering the fierce competition in science and business programs, which are highly selective even for top-ranked applicants.
Through years of structured writing courses and personalized essay coaching, Steven helps students uncover meaningful personal stories and craft standout application materials. His thoughtful and persistent mentorship has enabled many students, particularly Chinese boys with STEM and business aspirations, to gain admission to elite institutions.
