Academic Background
Nick has a well-rounded academic foundation in both the humanities and sciences, with experience in mathematics competitions, physics competitions, and data science research. He is known for his strong communication skills and his ability to explain complex concepts in clear, accessible language. Attuned to students’ psychological dynamics, Nick employs varied teaching methods to identify the most effective learning approaches for each student, ensuring efficient and meaningful progress. He is highly regarded by Hillhouse students.
Nick earned his undergraduate degree from Fudan University and studied as an exchange student at UC Berkeley. He completed his Master’s degree in Data Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) with an exceptional all-A academic record. In just two years at Hillhouse, Nick has already achieved impressive teaching results. He excels at helping students build sound mathematical intuition, allowing them to break free from rote problem-solving and develop true mastery and adaptability. His work focuses on academic achievement enhancement, standardized test preparation, research competitions, mathematical modeling, academic contests, and guidance for private school, undergraduate, and graduate admissions.
Teaching Experience
At Hillhouse Education, Nick has tutored university-level courses in advanced mathematics, statistics, physics, and sociology for students from institutions such as UC Berkeley’s Data Science program, the University of Toronto’s Rotman Commerce, Western University’s Ivey Business School, and UBC. His students have consistently achieved excellent results.
He is also well-versed in the curricula of both public and private schools across Greater Vancouver, as well as top U.S. private schools, including St. George’s, Crofton House, Lord Byng, Prince of Wales, Magee, Pacific Academy, University Hill, and Churchill Secondary. His tutoring covers AP, IB, in-school, and online courses across multiple subjects, including mathematics, physics, and statistics. All of his students have achieved outstanding grades, typically scoring above 95% in their courses.
Nick is also actively involved in preparing students for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, and IELTS, covering both English and math components. Most Hillhouse students he has tutored for the SAT have achieved scores of 1540 and above.
Competition, Research, and Career Guidance Experience
In addition to academic enhancement, Nick actively tutors Hillhouse students in mathematics competitions, physics competitions, and mathematical modeling contests. He also assists students with applications to prestigious math research and AI research summer programs, achieving outstanding outcomes. He has contributed to the development of teaching materials and coaching for the Physics Bowl, helping students achieve top-100 global rankings. Nick has also guided students in writing papers for the world’s first high school AI research conference, where their work was successfully published under their names. Additionally, he has coached students in international mathematical modeling competitions such as HiMCM and IMMC, where his students earned the Meritorious and the Outstanding Award, winning the Canadian championship.
Every year, Nick participates in mentoring students’ data-driven research projects for Science Fairs, helping them strengthen their data analysis skills. These projects span diverse fields, including bioinformatics, economics, and sociology. Leveraging his rich experience in AI practice, Nick has successfully helped Hillhouse students secure AI internship positions. Notably, one of his former students became a research assistant in AI at a Google-affiliated lab during their first year of university, where they performed exceptionally well, earning recognition from supervisors and securing co-authorship on a top-tier journal publication while still a freshman.
Private School, University, and Graduate School Applications
Nick is a key member of Hillhouse’s admissions planning team. Each application season, he actively supports private school applicants, helping students gain admission to their schools of choice. For undergraduate applications, he participates in brainstorming sessions to help students uncover and highlight their unique experiences, contributing to successful admissions offers from top-tier universities such as Carnegie Mellon.
Each year, Nick also assists undergraduates in applying to elite U.S. graduate programs, with students typically receiving more than three offers each from top 30 universities. Notably, this year one of his students received admission offers from over six U.S. top 30 universities.
